Instructions for Use of Lubricating Oil Total Acid Value Diagnostic Reagent

【Product Name】

Generic Name: Total Acid Number (TAN) Diagnostic Reagent for Lubricating Oils

Product Name: Total Acid Number (TAN) Diagnostic Reagent for Lubricating Oils

English Name: TAN Test Kit

【Intended Use】

The lubricating oil service life we often talk about is an estimate based on laboratory data under ideal operating conditions. Due to the complexity of each application environment, the service life of the same lubricating oil can vary from site to site, leaving many customers unsure of the accurate oil change interval. Without data to explain this to customers, engineers' recommendations are somewhat inadequate and difficult for customers to accept; sending oil samples to professional testing institutions for analysis is not only time-consuming but also relatively expensive. To help customers determine the current condition of their lubricating oil on-site and understand more intuitively whether it needs changing, this product was designed to illustrate the corresponding changes in lubricating oil under oxidizing conditions.

【Testing Principle】

This method is used to determine the acidity or basic composition of lubricating oils soluble in isopropyl ethanol and toluene. It can be used to determine the changes in a lubricating oil under oxidizing conditions. A certain amount of lubricating oil sample is placed in the titration solvent, and the indicator solution in the test bottle is a naphthol solution; the color change is from blue to green and then to orange.

【Main 】

Toluene, distilled water, and naphthol indicators

【Included Items】

Test reagent x 1 2. Sampling pipette x 1 3. Oil blotting paper x 1

【Oil sample requirements】

1.When extracting lubricating oil samples, use dry, anhydrous sampling bottles to avoid secondary contamination by water.

2. When conducting tests, freshly extracted samples should be used whenever possible, and titration should begin after the samples have returned to room temperature.

【Test Methods】

Before conducting any tests, the instruction manual must be read in its entirety. Before use, both the product and the lubricating oil sample to be tested should be brought back to room temperature.

1.Use a pipette to collect the lubricating oil sample to be tested.

2.After wiping the surface of the pipette, open the reagent bottle cap and add ten drops of the sample to be tested into the reagent.

3.Cover the reagent bottle and shake it appropriately to ensure the lubricating oil sample is fully mixed with the reagent.

4.Wait for the reagent color to change; the test result should be read within 2-3 minutes.

(Note: Do not exceed the capacity of this reagent bottle. Please be careful.)

【Use】

1.This reagent is for single use only during on-site testing.

2. This reagent is only for screening qualitative results; oxidation detection should be confirmed by quantitative assay.

3. This applies to cases where lubricating oil fails due to oxidation under normal use. However, it may be slightly inaccurate for cases where lubricating oil fails due to emulsification.

4. Test results should be read within 2-3 minutes. To prevent false reactions, results will be invalid if more than 30 minutes have passed since sample addition.

【Interpretation of Test Results】

15

Blue reagent:This means the reagent retains its original color without significant change. This indicates that the lubricating oil has not undergone oxidation, and its neutralization value is between 0-0.6 mg KOH/g, making it safe for use.

16

Green reagents:If the reagent changes from blue to green, it indicates that the lubricating oil has deteriorated. If the neutralization value is between 0.6 and 2.0 mg KOH/g, it can still be used, but should be monitored regularly.

17

Yellow reagent:The reagent changed from blue to yellow, indicating that the lubricating oil has been oxidized. The neutralization value is above 2.0 mg KOH/g, which means that the total acid value (TAN) of the lubricating oil has reached the limit, and sludge and coke have begun to form. The lubricating oil needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

【Precautions】

Wear safety glasses during the experiment to avoid getting the product on your clothes or skin. Never get it in your eyes.

【first aid】

  1. If the chemicals accidentally splash into your eyes, rinse immediately with running water or saline solution. While rinsing, lift both the upper and lower eyelids to ensure there are no residual chemicals (15-20 minutes), then apply eye drops immediately.
  2. If skin contact occurs, wash the affected area with soap and water until no chemical residue remains.
